PAPUA NEW GUINEA KORGUA ESTATE
Tasting Notes
The cup opens with aromas of warm toffee, raw sugar, and caramelized grains, layered with delicate suggestions of cooked plum, dark berries, and dried orchard fruit. On the palate, the texture is notably expansive and enveloping, carrying flavors of date sugar, sorghum syrup, and ripe stone fruit with an effortless natural sweetness.
As the cup evolves, more contemplative notes begin to emerge: black tea, dried herbs, polished wood, and faint traces of spice, all framed by a refined tannic structure that lends persistence and poise rather than heaviness. There is richness here, but also restraint — a coffee that reveals itself gradually, rewarding attention and patience.
Elegant yet grounded, Korgua Estate offers a singular expression of Papua New Guinea: luminous fruit, deep sweetness, and a graceful, lingering finish.
Origin & Stewardship
Korgua Estate rests in the Nebilyer Valley of Papua New Guinea’s Central Highlands, where cool mountain air, volcanic soils, and elevations approaching 1,400 meters shape coffees of quiet distinction and remarkable purity. Stewarded today by Brian Leahy, the estate carries forward a legacy deeply tied to exploration, heritage, and the rugged beauty of the Highlands themselves.
Composed primarily of older Bourbon and Typica plantings, this selection possesses an uncommon grace and transparency. The cup opens with delicate aromatics recalling warm grains, mountain flowers, and fresh-cut wood, gradually unfolding into notes of subtle stone fruit, honeyed citrus, and raw sugar. Its sweetness is refined rather than overt — less opulence than poise — carried by a silken texture and a long, luminous finish.
There is a remarkable clarity to this coffee. Nothing feels forced or exaggerated. Instead, it offers a composed expression of origin: restrained, elegant, and quietly complex. Those accustomed to heavier or darker styles may initially find its character understated, yet with attention comes extraordinary nuance and depth.
A coffee not of excess, but of harmony.
