Featuring 40 individual grind settings, from fine to coarse, the Encore can please any palate with its gamut of accurate and repeatable grind settings. The efficient DC motor keeps your beans cool, even during extended grind times, while a combination of electric and gear speed reducers slow the burr to 450 RPM, ensuring a smooth bean feed and reducing noise, heat and static buildup.

Breville's Grind Control is the first household coffee maker with an adjustable grinder and calibration function that not only allows you to grind before you brew, you can also customize the grind size and coffee volume to suit your taste.

Ground coffee should be brewed within a minute of grinding as the volatile aromatics begin to dissipate almost immediately once ground. Therefore the built in grinder allows you to capture freshness and essential oils from the coffee beans by grinding right before you brew. The machined stainless steel burrs deliver consistent ground particle sizes for a more balanced, full flavored cup.

Manual Burr Grinders

Manual or hand mills are great -

  1. When you brew small amounts of coffee.

  2. When you have limited counter space.

  3. If you want a conical grade mill on the cheap.

  4. If you live off the grid or travel a lot.

  5. If you want to avoid the noise of an electric mill.

  6. If you want to connect to a simpler, slower time.

There are a few factors to consider when purchasing a hand mill, such as, size, weight, capacity.... though probably the most important factor to consider is how will the mill will fit in your hand. Grinding on a handmill requires a sturdy grip, and you will want to maintain good leverage for the few minutes it will take to grind the beans. Consider a mill that you can comfortably grasp in your hand, or alternativly a Zassenhaus Knee Mill, which you can leverage between your knees. Manual mills are suitable for drip, espresso and the finer side of a French Press Grind.

Hario Skerton

The Skerton mill has ceramic burrs and a very sturdy construction. The grind quality is very good, and the mill grinds efficiently, fairly quickly, but not too fast. Like any manual mill it takes some elbow grease to crank out a grind, but the workout is worth it!

It has a conical burr design, so it can do a range of grinds from espresso to a passable French press grind (on the finer side of French press). The top part is plastic, the bottom is a glass jar. The top acts as a lid, so technically you could grind and then store the coffee in the base; but who would do that? It does make a handy travel grinder - especially if you remove the glass part and grind directly into a brewer, like a cone or an Aeropress.

The grind adjustment is locked in place through the top mechanism. To change the setting, you unscrew the top nut, lift the bracket and spin the wheel to a different setting, then replace the bracket and then lock it in by replacing the top nut. So in essence it is a stepped adjustment, not continuous like on the Zassenhaus models.

If you want to use another glass container to screw onto the hopper, we found that glass jars with a 2-3/4" diameter opening fit nicely. Also - there is a rubbery ring that you can put on the top of the hopper - sort of a flange to help keep the beans from sliding out.

Porlex

This stainless steel grinder is an excellent choice for those grinding coffee on the road, camping, at the office, etc. The conical burrs are fully adjustable for different grind types with a clicking knob under the bottom burr. The entire body is stainless steel and all the parts fit together very well. There is a spring located in the grinding mechanism that pushes the bottom burr down which will help you obtain a more even grind when grinding coarse. The flange underneath the burrs adjusts how fine or coarse your grinds will be. Turning it to the right will tighten it and create finer grinds. About 7 to 8 clicks back from the tightest position will give you a medium grind. We recommend you experiment and discover what settings are best for your brewing needs.

The grind quality is good, on par or slightly better than the Hario mills with ceramic burrs. It creates a little more "fines" than the Zassenhaus Turkish Mill. The handle is longer than the Hario mills which makes a big difference; it gives a lot more leverage in grinding. It just has better ergonomics and a better knob to grip. Grind 22 grams of coffee in 50 seconds with the Porlex, and it took 30 seconds longer in the comparable Hario - not a huge difference but the burrs seems to pull in the beans better and faster.

The capacity for whole beans is 44 grams (about 1/2 cup). That's enough for 2-4 cup brews. Of course you can refill and grind more for larger amounts.

Another big plus is that it fits into an Aeropress which makes this a good choice for Aeropress owners on the move.
