Cupping Notes:

Gatugi: A Singular Expression of Terroir

The pedigree of this exceptional Kenyan coffee is evident from the first impression—a cup of remarkable purity, where refined sweetness unfolds with the transparency of simple syrup and a lifted vibrancy reminiscent of the finest citrus. The fragrance reveals an intricate aromatic profile, interwoven with notes of ripe citrus, wild honey, and delicate baking spices—nuances of allspice and ginger lending complexity and depth.

As the infusion develops, the aromatic intensity deepens, evoking the brilliance of cranberry-raspberry nectar layered with profound sweetness and the refined elegance of loose-leaf black teas. The palate is illuminated by radiant citrus tones, revealing the lively essence of sun-ripened lemon and sweet orange. These elements give way to a finely tuned acidity that shimmers across the palate with extraordinary clarity.

The structure is further defined by the interplay of stone fruit and red berry accents, imbuing the cup with a sense of freshness and vibrancy. The finish is long and graceful, with a refreshing tannic impression evocative of the finest English Breakfast black tea, subtly underscored by a lingering citrus zest. This is a coffee of profound balance and precision, where each facet of its terroir is expressed with the utmost clarity. Gatugi stands as a testament to the heights that Kenyan coffee can achieve, its purity and finesse recalling the grandeur of the world’s most extraordinary wines.

Farm Notes:

Gatugi: A Legacy Rooted in Excellence

Gatugi stands as a hallmark of Kenya’s storied coffee heritage, sourced from the esteemed Othaya Farmer’s Cooperative Society (FCS)—one of the most distinguished collectives in the country. With origins tracing back to the late 1950s, Othaya encompasses an extensive network of 18 meticulously operated wet mills, each upholding an unwavering commitment to quality and tradition.

Perched at just under 1900 meters above sea level, Gatugi Factory is nestled along the Ichamama River, its waters flowing from the pristine Karima Forest above. These factories, akin to the finest domaines in viticulture, are highly specialized washing stations dedicated to the processing of coffee within a cooperative framework—ensuring that every lot represents the pinnacle of its terroir.

Our approach to sourcing is guided by an uncompromising pursuit of excellence. While we frequently return to established societies renowned for producing Kenya’s most remarkable coffees, we also seek out new and emerging cooperatives demonstrating extraordinary potential. Othaya’s pedigree is undeniable, and we have been privileged to secure some of their most outstanding lots over the past two seasons.

This particular lot was acquired outside of the traditional Kenya auction system, allowing us to secure the exact coffee we desired without the uncertainty of competitive bidding. To do so, we negotiated directly with the producers, ensuring a premium price above the highest auction bids—an investment in both quality and sustainability.

This is the AA outturn, denoting the most meticulously sorted and largest bean selection from this harvest. A reflection of Gatugi’s high-altitude growing conditions, disciplined processing, and the expertise of its producers, it is a coffee that captures the essence of its origin with unparalleled purity and refinement.
