Guatemala La Libertad Domaine Terrazas
Cupping Notes
The dry fragrance of this coffee is highlighted by raw sugars and mild spice notes, with a hint of toffee-coated nuts. When hot water is added, the aroma reveals a moderate intensity of dark caramel and bittersweetness. The cup features a central theme of caramel sweetness and background bitterness, creating a balanced base for the top notes to shine.
As the coffee cools to a pleasant drinking temperature, a top note of black tea emerges, accompanied by accents of candied nut and green apple. The acidity is mild to moderate. It becomes more rounded, providing a smoother, lower-acid cup. There is an intriguing interplay of bittersweetness and savory accents, akin to chocolate malted beer grains, leading to a hint of Stout-like beer in the long finish.
The texture is notably creamy, contributing to a lasting and impactful aftertaste. This coffee's complex profile and balanced flavors make it a remarkable choice for those seeking a rich and nuanced cup.
Farm Notes
Finca Terrazas, situated in the high altitudes of La Libertad, Huehuetenango, is renowned for its exceptional SHB (Strictly Hard Bean) grade coffee. This region's unique combination of abundant rainfall, lush shade, and moderate temperatures creates the ideal environment for cultivating premium coffee.
Dr. Jorge Vides M.D., a native of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, embarked on his coffee-growing journey in 1958 with the purchase of La Bolsa, a farm nestled in La Libertad. Initially accessible only by horseback, the farm is now known for its meticulous cultivation of Bourbon and Caturra varietals. Dr. Vides' dedication to quality coffee production earned him the prestigious "Outstanding Coffee Grower" award from Guatemala's National Coffee Association (ANACAFE) in 1984.
Since 1995, Dr. Vides' legacy has been carried forward by his daughter, Maria Elena Vides, and grandson, Renardo Ovalle. Their third and newest farm, Finca Terrazas, sits at altitudes ranging from 1700 to 2050 meters above sea level, continuing the family tradition of producing exceptional coffee.
